“I just want to be your boyfriend.” Eli’s eyes held Clare’s gaze long enough for her to understand just how serious he was.
“Really?” She asked skeptically. How could he still want to be with her after everything that had happened between them? It was too much for him. It had to be. “Are you sure?”
“I’ve never been more sure of anything in my life,” Eli replied as he took Clare’s hand in his, gently tracing the indents of her palm.
“But Eli we hurt each other so bad last time. How do you know it’s not going to be like that again?”
Eli could see the fear and worry in Clare’s eyes and all he could think about was taking that away. “Clare, look at me. Look at me,”he said putting emphasis on the second sentence. “It’s not going to be like last time. I’m better. I’m still me, just healthier.”
“What do you mean ‘you’re you?’ You were you all this year. With Imogen, with Fiona. With Adam.” Clare could feel the tears welling up in her eyes.
“You don’t get it do you?” Eli asked before lifting Clare’s face to meet his. ”I’m not me without you.”
